Ujjwal Roy, Narail District Representative:
The behind-the-scenes incident has come out after the arrest of four people including the shooter involved in the shooting death of former Chairman of Mallikpur Union Parishad of Lohagara Upazila, Narail. The murder happened mainly because of a dispute with a former UP member and the spread of dominance in the area. The opponent brought a hired shooter and shot and killed Kamal. However, the former UP member accused in this incident has not been arrested yet.
The elite force said that such information was found in the preliminary interrogation of the four arrested. Ujjal Roy, Narail district representative said that Chairman Kamal was killed on May 10. Seven days after the incident, after four people were arrested, the mystery of the murder came out.
The four arrested are shooter Sajedul Mallik (25), Pavel Sheikh (28), Mamun Molya (26) and Rahmat Ullah Sheikh (19). Among them, two are students, one is a driver, and another is a worker. They were arrested from Bayezid and Narail in Chittagong on Thursday.
Commander Arafat Islam, Director of RAB’s media wing, presented detailed information in a press conference at RAB’s media center in the capital’s Karwan Bazar on Friday (May 17) morning.
On May 10, Mustafa Kamal was ambushed and shot by miscreants and fled from the scene. Later, the locals rescued him with serious injuries and took him to Lohagara Upazila Health Complex. He then died on the road while being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. His elder brother filed a murder case in Lohagara police station as a plaintiff in this murder incident. Four people have been arrested in that case.
The spokesperson of RAB said that the murder was committed due to a long dispute. The former chairman of Mallikpur Union, Mustafa Kamal, and the former member of Ward No. 2 of the same union, Akbar Hossain Lipon, had animosity from the east centered on the spread of dominance. In December 2022, a clash occurred between the followers of Mustafa Kamal and Akbar Hossain Lipon due to an earlier dispute. Lipon was seriously injured in the clash and one of his hands was amputated. Later Lipon and his followers looked for an opportunity to take revenge on Mustafa Kamal. This is the reason for this murder.
Commander Arafat Islam, director of RAB’s media wing, said that Sajedul, who was arrested at his younger brother’s house on the morning of the incident, planned to kill Mustafa Kamal under the direction of Lipon. As per the plan, after confirming the location of Mustafa Kamal, on the evening of the incident, Sajedul along with others went to the spot with foreign weapons including switch gear knife, Ram Das. As soon as Mustafa Kamal reached the spot, Sajedul took the opportunity and fired three rounds at Mustafa Kamal with a foreign pistol in his hand. Out of which two rounds hit Kamal in the chest and back and seriously injured him.
According to RAB, Sajedul along with other accomplices fled and hid in different areas of the country including Dhaka, Patenga and Chittagong to avoid arrest by the law enforcement agencies. In this situation, Sajedul, Pavel and Mamun were arrested by RAB from Bayezid area of Chittagong. According to the information given by Sajedul, Rahmat Ullah was arrested from Narail.
Commander Arafat Islam said, in the initial interrogation, Sajid Mallik said that he directly participated in this murder. At that time, he fired three rounds with four rounds of ammunition in his hand. It affects the hands, chest and armpits of the chairman. Later he threw this weapon in Madhumati river in Narail. He then went into hiding to avoid arrest by the law enforcement agencies. Others also had weapons. They were hired for one lakh rupees for this murder.
When asked whether the former UP member involved is a worker of a political party or not, he said, “Political identity is not important here, the crime is important.” Everyone in our country can be someone’s political follower. Crime has nothing to do with political pursuits. Crime is our priority and we will bring whoever is guilty to justice.
